FORTY-TWO inmates, who sat for the 2009 Primary Leaving Examinations at Luzira Prison, have qualified to join secondary school.

Of the 42, three passed in division one, 17 in division two, 13 in division three, while eight passed in division four.
The best performing candidate was Aziz Bogere, who scored aggregate 11.

Others who passed in division one were Godfrey Tabu and Ronald Ssenyange, who both scored aggregate 12.

Anatoli Biryomumaisho, the senior welfare officer, who is also the school head teacher, said the results had improved compared to the previous years.

“In 2008, we had only one candidate in grade one.”
Biryomumaisho, however, said the institution would have recorded better results if the necessary logistics were in place.

“We are not receiving Universal Primary Education (UPE) funds. We do not have scholastic materials, so we have to rely on fellow inmates to teach their colleagues. We also have no trained teachers,” Biryomumaisho said.
He appealed to the education ministry to provide the basic scholastic materials.

“If we are absorbed under the UPE programme, I am confident that our performance would even surpass that of other schools operating in better environments.”

Biryomumaisho said education is key in transforming and rehabilitating inmates.
He added that many inmates had picked interest in acquiring education.

“We have about 800 inmates enrolled for primary education and we believe the number will increase,” Biryomumaisho said.
