He is the third born of four children born to an absentee father. They were in Chicago by their mother, Joanne Kelly.

He first performed in Africa in June last year, in South Africa and Nigeria. He is going to perform for the first time in East and Central Africa.

He frequently wears basketball jerseys with the number 12 to commemorate his groundbreaking album — 12 Play.

His mother died of cancer in 1993.
