Letter of the day

EDITOR—I wish to congratulate the acting Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof Venansius Baryamureeba, for sticking to his word. He said students would start getting their transcripts on graduation day and that is exactly what happened. I wished I was one of those students. This gives us all new hope.

Previously, getting a transcript was a dream. One would go through a lot of hardship to get a transcript while others would give up as long as their employers were not bothered about it. How I wish I was among the most recent graduands! I finished my course in June 2007 but to date, I have struggled in vain to get my transcript as if I did not have a right to have it! Thanks to my employer who has been, and is still patient.

Every time I get a holiday from work, I make endless trips to the Senate building only to get disappointed. Worse still, the last time I went to check, they sent me from room to room. On the third day they told me that some documents were missing from my file. I almost collapsed! Was it my fault?

These are documents that are filed firmly in every student’s file, so one wonders how they get lost! Moreover, there is an office, (Room 303) in the same Senate building where these documents could be found if need arose. Of course I did not know this, so they could not work on my transcript until I produced those documents which unfortunately I had left upcountry.

I have visited almost all the offices on Senate Building to ensure that I get my transcript. Not even this has yielded results. The officers in these offices send students from one room to another and the problems keep accumulating until one feels like crying. One can never know exactly what to do or what is wanted when pursuing a transcript at Makerere.

On top of this, some officers just keep strolling from one room to another, with newspapers in their hands, as if they have no work to do. If such a trend continues, I am scared I will never get my certificate. The transport and time wasted and all the inconveniences caused to me and to all my colleagues don’t seem to bother anybody! My humble appeal to the new Academic Registrar and to the Vice Chancellor is to look into the plight of students who graduated more than a year ago and sort out their problems.

Since the graduation ceremonies are now over, do the former students in my category have hope of ever getting their transcripts? We have hope in the new, dynamic administration. Please help us.
