LIRA schools rugby chairman Richard Oketch died on Saturday night in a fire that gutted his house in the staff quarters at Lango College in Lira.

According to the area rugby development officer Andrew Erach, Oketch’s house was set ablaze by unknown assailants who are on the run.

“Fire gutted the house at night. We could not rescue him despite managing to save the other family members,” Erach said of the incident.

Meanwhile Lango College put aside the death of their patron to upset giants Namilyango College 13-5 in the Coca-Cola Super 8 league in Lira on Sunday.

In Entebbe defending champions St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) whipped Makerere College 47-0. Ivan Amogomu, Muhammad Omar and Kenneth Lubango were on target for the hosts.

Elsewhere, London College Maya beat Hana Mixed 27-0 while King’s College Budo got a walkover against Comboni College of Lira.

“It’s a sign of growth that upcountry teams can defeat Kampala schools that have dominated the sport for a long time,” national schools rugby chairperson Ronnie Mutebi said of the growing competition in schools.
