FIRST Lady Janet Museveni has hailed Joseph Behakanira for his contribution when she was contesting for the Ruhaama parliamentary seat in 2006.

Speaking at Behakanira’s burial on Thursday in Kitashekwa, Ntungamo district, Mrs Museveni said Behakanira worked tirelessly with his Nyekundeire Group to campaign for her.

The proprietor of the J&M Airport Road Hotel and Avemar Shopping Centre, among others, died on Monday.

Hundreds of mourners attended the requiem mass led by Mbarara archbishop Paul Kamuza Bakyenga.

Bakyenga said Behakanira believed in prayer, which was why he built chapels in his homes. He supported the training of priests by paying their fees and by the time of his death, he had promised to build a health centre and a church in his village.

She said: “We have lost a good brother. We also recognise him for his contribution during the bush war.”

The First Lady dismissed press statements that Behakanira had huge debts and that he died of stress. She noted that it was normal practice for people to acquire loans, adding that there was no way one could develop without getting loans. She said the President had ordered a probe into Behakanira’s death because it happened suddenly.

Behakanira last week appeared before a parliament committee probing CHOGM funding, where he was grilled over sh2.6b.

The widow, Mary Goodler, scoffed at reports that Behakanira was a front man in various business under his name.
