THE first Lady and state minister for Karamoja affairs, Janet Museveni, has urged farmers in Karamoja to participate in government programmes so as to transform their livelihood and develop the region.

Mrs. Museveni was speaking at the closure of the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) week-long sensitisation seminars in the districts of Moroto, Nakapiriprit, Abim, Kotido and Kaabong.

The seminars, which were conducted by officials from the agriculture ministry and the NAADS secretariat, were meant to address the gaps identified by Mrs. Museveni during her tour of government programmes in the region in October and November last year.

“Without commitment, the people of Karamoja will not be successful. Now that you have been sensitised, you should utilise the NAADS programme to thrive,” she said.

Mrs. Museveni said NAADS was designed to enable farmers improve household income.
She urged the model farmers benefiting from the programme to become change agents and teachers to other farmers.

The animal husbandry state minister, Bright Rwamirama, said the Government would soon introduce modern livestock markets and build valley dams.

He added that slaughter sheds and breeding centres would be constructed in each sub-county of Karamoja district.
