Drunkardness and drug abuse are the major causes of poverty among the youth in Teso region, the youth state minister, Jessica Alupo, has said.

Alupo said the youth are vulnerable because they do not have sources of income. “Drinking alcohol and drug abuse is bad because it makes one unproductive,” said Alupo, adding that Teso is lagging behind because the youth have refused to listen to their elders.

She cautioned the youth against misusing funds that the Government gives to them for development, adding that development in an area depends on residents.

“There is no government that can give people money, not even in the developed countries. So stop drug abuse and drinking and start economic activities,” she advised.

Alupo was on Friday officiating at the handover of cheques by the National Youth Council to Teso youth groups at the People’s Guest House in Soroti town.

The council sponsors the rural youth projects to empower and promote entrepreneurship among the youth. A total of 10 groups in the districts of Amuria and Kaberamaido got sh500,000 each.
