Hippos have destroyed over 20 acres of banana plantations in Mutumba sub-county in Bugiri district. The animals that normally cross from Lake Victoria to the main land during the night have for the past four days destroyed several gardens in the area.

According to the Habulekhe LC1 chairperson, James Onyango, most residents are likely to face food shortages because of the invasion. The worst affected villages are Habulekhe, Lubango, Bumeru A and Siyalo, Onyango said.

He added that because fish reduced in the lake, most residents had resorted to agriculture in order to sustain their families. The LC3 chairperson, Charles Kitosi, said hippos have been destroying gardens in the area for the past two years.

Kitosi urged the relevant authorities to capture the animals before they destroy all the crops in the sub-county. The resident district commissioner, Margret Mwanamoiza, said over 45 families were affected.

She said relevant authorities would be consulted to find ways of solving the problem.
