SEBEI sub-region dominated yesterday’s 5,000 metres race as the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships started at Malukhu playground in Mbale.

Alex Chemutai from Kapchorwa won in 14:28.25 and was closely followed by Philip Kipyeko of Bukwo district who clocked 14:54.98. Tonny Okello finished third in 15:17.34 in the upper youth category.

In the lower youth category of 1,500 metres, Gilbert Ogwang from Wakiso emerged winner with Sironko’s John Kyandede coming second while Jimmy Okello from Oyam finished in third position.

A total of 70 districts and municipal teams are competing in the championship where bib numbers and International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) identification tags are being used for the first time in primary schools championship.
