THE executive director of the National Drug Authority (NDA), Apollo Muheirwe, has told Indian drug manufacturers eyeing Uganda to consider forming local partnerships to produce drugs here.

Muheirwe was on Thursday officiating at the opening of a two-day drugs exhibition by Indian pharmaceutical operators at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. The Indian Pharmaceutical operators were sponsored on the trip to Uganda by their ministry of commerce and industry.

The drugs on display included antibiotics, anti-allergens to drugs for skin ailments and beauty products.
“Look for partnerships so that the drugs can be manufactured here.” The government is encouraging partnerships so that the pharmaceuticals can be accessed by those who need them cheaply.

The NDA head of the drug inspection, Kate Kikule, said counterfeit drugs had increased on the market. To check the vice, she said, NDA had started impromptu inspections.
