THE Mukono North constituency seat has been declared vacant after DP’s Betty Nambooze won a petition against MP Peter Bakaluba.

Nambooze dragged Bakaluba to court in 2006, claiming that he had rigged the parliamentary elections.

A notice from Parliament signed by the deputy clerk, Paul Wabwire, to the Electoral Commission (EC) stated: “The commission is requested to conduct a byelection to fill the vacancy.”

Bakaluba was last week thrown out of Parliament by the ruling of the Supreme Court which found him guilty of election malpractice.

This followed a letter written by the Speaker, Edward Ssekandi, directing the clerk to notify the EC chairperson of the vacancy.
Bakaluba has already declared his intention to take on Nambooze in the pending byelections.

Meanwhile, Lukwago and Company Advocates, the legal advisers of Nambooze, have filed a notice asking the Director of Public Prosecutions to institute a criminal case against Bakaluba.

“If you do not prosecute Bakaluba in your judgement, you would have complied with the commercialisation of politics,” read the notice dated April 9.
