The electrical installation course trains students mainly in industrial and domestic electrical installations. George Mwesigye, the principal of Lugogo Vocational Training Institute, says students also gain skills in general maintenance and repair of electrical gadgets and tools.

The course is taught at various levels. The first level, which is for Primary Seven leavers, is conducted by technical schools. At this level, students who complete the course receive the Uganda Junior Technical Examinations Certificates (UJTEC). It takes three years.

The second level, which you have studied, is for O’level and these get craft certificates upon completion. James Mugerwa, a ministry of education principal education officer in charge of technical institutions, says even holders of the UJTEC certificates are eligible for admission to this second level course. This takes two years.

There is a third level for advanced certificates for holders of craft certificates. Diplomas are designed for A’level leavers and those with advanced vocational certificates can be admitted.

Mugerwa says you still have an opportunity to join A’level. But this can only happen if you have the Uganda Certificate of Education (O’level certificate). You will be ineligible for A’level if you took up the vocational education path right from Primary Seven.

Mugerwa says it would be wiser for you to concentrate on your vocational career since A’level is purely academic.

If you were to heed his advice, you would enroll for a one-year advanced certificate in electrical installation and later join a technical college for a diploma or Kyambogo University for a bachelor’s degree in vocational studies.
