CLERK of Course Stephen Byaruhanga reckons drivers and the quality of cars in the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally are likely to produce the most competitive race in the history of the 12-year event.

“I have analysed the cars and drivers on the entry list. Given the short and smooth competitive sections, it is going to be a close battle. I wouldn’t be surprised if the race is as close as the 1998 edition,” Byaruhanga remarked.

In 1998 former Africa champion Charles Muhangi, navigated by Byaruhanga, tied with Karim Hirji. Muhangi was declared champion because of his fastest time in the opening section.

Byaruhanga explained that heavy rains have created small potholes in the competitive sections but they would not substantially affect the pace.

The longest competitive section is 16km while the shortest is 4km, making it difficult for the front runners to beat each other by more than half a minute.

“The route is convenient and enjoyable to competitors, spectators and officials,” Byaruhanga stated.

The event that is the third round of the Africa Rally Championship has attracted 21 crews from Uganda, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Local drivers will go route reccing in Luwero this weekend while international competitors will check the route next week.

The rally will start with a super special stage at Lubiri on April 30. The first and second legs will be in Luwero over the next two days.
