THE NRM candidate, Bakaluba Mukasa, and DP’s Betty Nambooze were among the six people nominated yesterday to contest for the Mukono North MP by-elections.

The seat fell vacant recently when Mukasa, who had been occupying it, lost a petition in the Supreme Court over election malpractices.

Nambooze was accompanied by DP President Norbert Mao, Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago and former DP President Paul Ssemwogerere.

Nambooze said she wanted to prove that she only lost because the 2006 vote was rigged, and to dispel speculation that she could not contest again due to lack of academic qualifications.

She complained that there were new polling stations amid inadequate voter sensitisation.

“These are some of the ways our 2006 vote was stolen. We have resolved that there will be no rigging. The courts declared that the 2006 election was rigged and we are ready to prove it,” she said.

Nambooze’s supporters, who were chanting DP songs and slogans stayed outside as she entered the hall for nomination.

Mao said the party could not make the mistake of fronting a new untested person who would not defeat Bakaluba.

“We shall make sure that all the polling stations in the constituency are guarded to avoid vote rigging. We are here to confirm the victory which Nambooze got four years ago but was denied,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bakaluba arrived in the company of NRM supporters clad in party shirts and blowing whistles.
He said the court decided without giving due consideration to evidence he had adduced.

“Since the court was presided over by a few people who did not give adequate consideration to our witnesses submissions, we have decided to take the case to the people of Mukono to decide,” he said.

Bakaluba was accompanied by Mukono district chairman Francis Mukoome, NRM district chairman Edrisa Njuki and the party’s Director of mobilisation and administration, Dr. Hassan Galiwango. Nambooze and Bakaluba stood against each other in 2006 and Bakaluba defeated Nambooze.

However, Nambooze rejected the results, claiming that Bakaluba had rigged the vote.

After nominations, Bakaluba and Nambooze proceeded to launch campaigns at Goma sub-county, and Walusubi Namaa.
