SAM Akaki, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) envoy, is contesting to become an MP in the United Kingdom as an independent candidate.

Akaki, who launched his campaign for the new Ealing Central and Acton constituency, is backed by former BBC journalist and one-time independent MP Martin Bell.

Akaki has lived in the UK for 25 years. He said he chose to stand for the elections after becoming disillusioned with the mainstream parties in the UK.

“We are in the worst economic crisis for 60 years and we can’t afford to replace Trident when here, in Ealing and Acton, the main hospital is threatened with the closure of three key departments and we need £5 billion to help save hospitals,” Akaki said in a statement published in the Ealing gazette.

He said party-affiliated MPs do not vote with their conscience, but what the party wishes and as an independent, he would not be accountable to a political party, but to the people of Ealing and Acton.

Top FDC leaders could not be reached for comment yesterday.
