THE Police in Kabarole are holding a 35-year-old man for allegedly stealing government drugs worth over sh5m. The district CID chief, Joseph Bitali Ssentamu, identified the suspect as Abdul Karim Mwesigwa, a resident of Kisakyabibi village in Busoro sub-county, Kabarole district.

Ssentamu said Mwesigwa was arrested on Monday afternoon at Wooden bar and lodge on Fort Portal-Kasese road with a bag of drugs that included coartem, septrin and panadol.

He said the Police was tipped off by people to whom Mwesigwa sold a pack of coartem at sh1,000. “On the open market, coartem goes for sh18,000. The people got suspicious when he sold it at sh1,000,” Ssentamu said on Monday.

The Police suspects Mwesigwa stole the drugs from a health centre. “He is neither a doctor nor does he work in a health facility. I highly suspect he stole the drugs,” Ssentamu added. However, on interrogation, Mwesigwa said he picked the drugs from Caltex stage in Fort Portal town.
