HANDBALL - Sarah Nanyanzi is to captain the U-20 women handball side for the inaugural Zone 5 championships that gets under way this Friday in Kigali, Rwanda. The team is undergoing intensive training at the Kibuli Police grounds under head coach, Patrick Tabule. The captain has promised a good performance from the side that leaves by road tomorrow. Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Sudan are the other teams taking part.

Bika football set for July 24

SOCCER - The first round of Bika football tournament is scheduled for July 24 with Lugave taking on Ngonge. The match will be graced by Kabaka Ronald Mwenda Mutebi II at Nakivubo war memorial stadium. This year’s tournament will have action in Buwama (Mpigi), Buikwe,and Bukalasa in a bid to take the tournament nearer to the people. Vision Group has pumped sh100m into the tournament. Ffumbe are defending champions.

Athlete misses games slot
SWIMMING - Swimmer Sharif Kakooza has been dropped from the team to participate in this year’s Commonwealth Games due in New Delhi, India. According to the Uganda swimming body, Kakooza, who is in the US, has been dropped due to lack of communication. “The technical committee sat last weekend and made the decision,” Peter Mugisha, the federation secretary said.

SCRABBLE - Edwin Mugisha will lead the Ugandan team for the East African scrabble championships due June 4-6 at Yovani Hotel in Kampala. Uganda will field 16 players in the three-day event that the nation is hosting for the first time. 60 participants are expected from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda hosts Uganda and Zanzibar.
