TWO local athletics governing body UAF coaches will benefit from the Germany-Uganda technical cooperation with full sponsorship courses at the University of Mainz in Germany, reports Norman Katende.

Kyambogo sports tutor and a member of the FUFA technical committee Charles Godwin Mukiibi and Francis Opiyo – a sports teacher in Gulu fly out over the weekend for a one year diploma course in sports management and coaching.

They were recommended by German expert, Gunter Lange, after excelling in courses he ran in Gulu and Kyambogo two years ago.

“They impressed Gunter and he is the one who advised the federation of their potential. The sponsors wanted people attached to the education system and the two suited the requirement,” explained athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru yesterday.

Mukiibi and Opiyo will spend the first four months learning the German language before the actual one-year training starts.

“It is the first full technical training programme we are offering to Ugandans. The two will study details of athletics including how to nurture athletes, training them and also other aspects that include medication and nutrition. We want them to come here to train all coaches,” Ayikoru added.

Volleyball and swimming are also expected to benefit from similar training later.
