FDC MP Geoffrey Ekanya has defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Ekanya made the announcement before President Yoweri Museveni at a rally in Malaba in his Tororo county constituency.

Museveni, who was in Bukedi to promote the Prosperity-for-All programme, said: “I welcome Ekanya. He has been in political wilderness. He has now joined the Movement. He has declared to me here. But let him come and declare in his own words,” Museveni said to cheers.

Ekanya stated: “Your Excellency, I am ready to work with you and all these people are ready to work with you. If you have given us food, we have washed our hands and are ready to eat with you.”

Opposition Chief Whip Kassiano Wadri said Ekanya was still an FDC member. “I am not worried at all. Ekanya is not the type of person who can cross.”

“How do you join a canoe that is ready to capsise?” Wadri asked.

Both Wadri and FDC spokesperson Wafula Ogutu said working with NRM did not mean joining the party.

Earlier, during the commissioning of a 20MW thermal power plant in Osukuru in Tororo, Ekanya unusually lauded the Government for developing his constituency.
