KABALE Hospital has set new charges for carrying out examinations on the dead and assault and defilement victims.

The deputy medical superintendent, Robert Mayeko, said the post-mortem examination will cost sh50,000, while examinations on assault victims will cost sh10,000 and defilement victims at sh20,000.

Mayeko said the hospital is understaffed and cannot carry out those services for free.

He said they have four specialists who are also involved in administration work and that the hospital lacks medical doctors. Mayeko blamed the problem on the Ministry of Health, which he said has failed to improve the human resource situation at the hospital.

He said the problem is compounded by lack of medical doctors at the seven health center 1Vs located in the counties.

Mayeko clarified that they will not charge for postmortem examinations of people who die in the hospital, but for those bodies brought from outside the hospital.

He said the Police officers will be requested to attend the post-mortem examination sessions so that they do not forget some body parts that may be detached from the body.

Deo Obongo, the district criminal investigations boss, said they are facing a big challenge over assaults, defilement and postmortem examinations.

He said there was no money at his station for post-mortem examinations, adding that he could not force the doctors to examine bodies taken to the hospital by the Police. Obongo appealed to the district and central government for assistance.

The deputy resident district commissioner, Shafiq Sekandi, said he will liaise with the chief administrative officer to find money for facilitating the post-mortem examinations.
