TODAY is the 24th day since an Anglican priest went missing from his home in Nakisunga, Mukono district.

Despite frantic searches in the districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and hospitals, 58-year-old Henry Kayizzi Nsubuga has not been found.

Born in 1952, Kayizzi has seven children aged between 18 and 35 years and a wife, Harriet Nakitende Nsubuga. He was the parish priest of St. John Church of Uganda in Kanyanya, a Kampala suburb.

Nakitende yesterday told The New Vision that in their frantic search, they have been to the shores of Lake Victoria, Mulago Hospital and other health facilities in Mukono examining numerous bodies, some mutilated, but none matched her husband’s features.

Nakitende is, however, optimistic that her husband is still alive.

She said the family plans to search the Uganda-Kenya border areas after friends said Kayizzi could have left the country.

“We were advised to check with immigration officials, but the family has to discuss this before someone goes there,” she stated.

Nakitende said a lot of money has been spent on the hunt.

“Several people are searching. We go wherever we suspect he could be. It is not easy to estimate the amount each has spent so far,” she added.

Yesterday, the officer in charge of Kawempe Police Station, Paul Mugisha, said the priest’s dissapearance had not been reported to the Police and, therefore, they could not launch an investigation into the matter.

Normally, a report of a missing person is made at a Police station nearest to where the person was last seen.

In a June 29 press statement, the Church of Uganda announced that Kayizzi was missing.

Kayizzi disappeared from his home in Mukono on June 15.

According to his son, Noah Nsubuga, the day Kayizzi disappeared, he seemed confused and incoherent.

Nsubuga said his father’s incoherence worried him so much that when he mentioned going to hospital, he wanted to escort him.

“As we prepared to leave, a neighbour offered to take him in her car. My fears were allayed because she is a family friend and I thought she would ensure that he reached the hospital safely,” Noah stated.

Kayizzi left Kanyanya reportedly to get treatment for headache and chest pain, but instead went to his second home in Nakisunga.
The caretaker at Nakisunga said when Kayizzi arrived, he boarded a boda boda and has not been seen since.

Bishop Wilberforce Luwalira of Namirembe Diocese, who led the service at Kayizzi’s church in Kanyanya, cautioned the congregation against making reckless statements regarding his disappearance.

Before he disappeared, Kayizzi was involved in a motor accident on June 10. He sustained minor injuries.

In the meantime, the Rev. Lwere of Mpererwe has taken over Kayizzi’s duties.
