LEADERSHIP wrangles in the Korean amateur boxing federation has forced the world amateur boxing governing body AIBA to switch the venue for this year’s congress and the 2011 world championships.

LEADERSHIP wrangles in the Korean amateur boxing federation has forced the world amateur boxing governing body AIBA to switch the venue for this year’s congress and the 2011 world championships, reports Johnson Were.

The congress and championships were to be held in the South Korean city of Busan, but AIBA during an executive meeting in Marrakesh last week moved the venue to Azerbaijan capital Baku.

“The World Championships is the most important event for any sports governing body. This event will only be able to succeed with support from a highly professional and committed local organizing committee backed by both the host city and the national host federation. Unfortunately, given the current situation with the governing body for boxing in South Korea, such conditions are clearly not in place.” AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu stated.

The hosting of the 2011 championship in Baku cements the city’s position as a major venue for boxing events since it hosted the 2009 President’s Cup and the 2010 youth championships.

With the elite world championships, the city adds the most prestigious AIBA event to its boxing portfolio.

Uganda will miss the championship due to the leadership wrangles in UABF.

Ching-Kuo Wu mourned Rwanda amateur boxing association president Antoine Semukanya who passed away last week.
