THE Electoral Commission yesterday held talks with political party officials to “foster a strong and vibrant multiparty democracy†ahead of the 2011 polls.The opposition politicians, under the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue, met the EC.chairman Badru Kiggundu, who thanked them for their initiative to foster confidence and trust in the commission.
The commission, he said, will uphold the established fair electoral laws, effective and independent electoral management system and a level playing field.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the parties chairman, Augustine Ruzindana, said his group had opted for peaceful co-existence, dialogue and cooperation to mitigate political differences and avoid violence.
He noted the role of the EC and asked for clarification on a number of issues including the display of voter’s registers, the composition of members of the parish tribunals and the demarcation of constituencies.
Other issues they discussed included transparency of design, procurement, printing and delivery of ballot papers as well as the tally process.
The team, included members of the Conservative Party, the Democratic Party and FDC. Justice Forum, NRM, Uganda Peoples Congress also exchanged views on their study tour to Ghana and Malawi.
“It was noted that the good practices found in Malawi and Ghana were already practiced in Uganda,†the commission said in a statement.
It added that the stakeholders had resolved to get involved in the electoral commission activities so that they can offer objective criticism and proposals for improvement.
