The First Lady and Karamoja affairs state minister, Janet Museveni, has urged the clergy to teach forgiveness and reconciliation to the people as the country nears next year’s general elections.

The First Lady and Karamoja affairs state minister, Janet Museveni, has urged the clergy to teach forgiveness and reconciliation to the people as the country nears next year’s general elections.
“Let us not use our pulpits to divide the people further, let us not promote ethnic hatred and disunity among our people,†she urged.
The First Lady was addressing the Church of Uganda clergy from Soroti and Kumi dioceses during a conference last Monday at Soroti Hotel.
“The season we are in can be very tense and uncertain for any nation. As we reflect on the past difficult situations like the insurgency, floods, the recent landslides in Bududa and the bomb blasts that claimed many innocent lives, it is easy to panic, but God is depending on His people, His priests to bring healing to the land and be the instruments of hope and encouragement to the people,†she said.
The First Lady lauded the clergy of Teso region for sherperding their people in the difficult times and urged them to also guide politicians to serve and unite the people.
Mrs. Museveni attributed most of the social problems to the absence of the influence of the church on societies. “If the church is absent, God is absent and if God is absent, the people perish because it is through Him that we get a vision for our nation.â€
She implored the church leaders to mobilise their flock to shun wicked ways. The chief of staff of the UPDF land forces, who was also guest speaker, Brig. Gen. Charles Angina, urged the clergy to use their interactions with the flock to transform the Teso people.
The convener of the conference, retired Bishop Gershom Ilukor, said the people of Teso were grateful for the prevailing peace.
He added that although Teso performed poorly in the 2006 elections, they had learnt and were ready to educate others to make better choices in the forthcoming elections.
The Soroti resident district commissioner, Ben Etonu, hailed the NRM government for developing the country. He advised the people of Teso to remember where they have come from and vote wisely.
