Police suspects appear in court over theft

THE 14 policemen who were arrested last month for allegedly stealing goods worth sh150m from a burning trailer at Namasere village in Bugiri district appeared in court on Friday.

The policemen, including Iganga district Police commander Gaudensio Okumu, were arraigned in Iganga Chief Magistrate’s Court together with their eight co-accused persons, including their wives.

The accused were Emmanuel Oyese, Edward Kyeroki, John Kavuma, Hasacha, David Bwana, Elizabeth Apolot, Alfred Komakech, Emmanuel Kintu, Geoffrey Owere and Steven Osia.
Others were Dennis Lokap, Ponsius Kibirige, Enoch Omaria, Charles Okurut, Janet Nandutu, Moses Babalanda, Paul Ngobi, Daniel Ntiire, Lovisa Babirye, Odong and Loy Nakato.

The Grade I Magistrate, Eleanor Alinza, heard that the incident occurred on the night of August 22.

Some of the items were allegedly recovered from the Police barracks, neighbouring villages and near a steel mill in Iganga. The Police officers were separately charged with failure to protect people’s property.

The judge rejected a request by the accused for bail and remanded them at Iganga district local administration prison until September 17.
