The Police have taken the bomb awareness campaign to schools, following the twin attacks in Kampala in July which left 76 people dead and scores injured. The first campaign took place at Namiryango College in Mukono district on Thursday.

Addressing the staff and the students, the Kampala metropolitan Police public relations officer, Ibinidi Ssenkumbi, said the terrorists were now targeting schools.

The mission of the terrorists, he added, was to have a big number of victims. “Many school authorities are reluctant to establish security systems. It’s high time you became security-conscious. Hiring security guards at your schools is not enough,” Ssenkumbi said.

He asked head teachers to watch teachers and students keenly, saying terrorists can use them as agents, promising them big sums of money.

Ssenkumbi said the sensitisation campaign will be conducted in both primary and secondary schools across the country. The Kampala metropolitan Police community horizon officer, Anatoli Muleterwa, cautioned teachers to close the gap between them and the students as a means of avoiding immoral acts like drug abuse and strikes.

He asked the school authorities to ensure a good relationship with the communities surrounding them for the security of the institutions.
