SPORTS state minister Charles Bakkabulindi says government is ready to help address the issue of national coach Bobby Williamson, who has run out of contract.

Bakkabulindi however requested the federation to put the request in writing, like they did when requesting for a hand in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

FUFA requested government to support them with sh350m this financial year for the campaign and government has already released sh65m.

“They know how we operate. We deal with documentation in the ministry and that is what they have to do for us to initiate the request,” advised Bakkabulindi yesterday.

He however insisted that government should be involved in setting new terms, like it was when Tomislav Sivic was appointed in 2006 and abandoned the job before signing a contract. FUFA and the sports department had a joint effort in the interviews and selection.

“It was easier for us to put him on the payroll as the department had taken part in almost all the process of seeing him come to Uganda. It is quite difficult to ask government to come in after all the discussions have been finalised,” said Bakkabulindi.

“By involving us in the discussions to renew the contract, we will have a basis of involving the department in paying his salary,” the minister added.

He added that they would expect Williamson to assist the ministry train teachers whenever he is free.

Williamson has meanwhile said that despite Cranes 3-0 whipping of Angola on Saturday can be rated as successful, the result will not make the players that featured permanent holders of positions on the team.

“It will all depend on how much they work hard to retain the positions,” he said. He said the way Geoffrey Sserunkuma stepped in to finish the game after Geoffrey Massa’s start shows there are many options.

“It is not only Sserunkuma but we have a number of strikers like Brian (Umony) and Robert Ssentongo. There is still a big journey and we will be interchanging them.”

He insisted that the David Obua and Massa striking partnership was still the best at this stage and said he expected better from defensive midfielder Mudde Ntambi.

He said he looked forward for good teamwork mostly against Kenya that lost their opener to Guinea 1-0.

“We need all the good performance and we will not change anything. We will have to give all we have to see that we qualify and we respect every team that we are set to play against,” the Scot tactician said.

Uganda next play away to Kenya on October 9.
