The High Court in Mukono has sentenced a 77-year-old man to 12 years imprisonment for causing the death of his 10-year-old son. William Isabirye, a resident of Kyengera in Kayunga district, was charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter, saying he did not intend to kill his son.

Prosecution, led by Lucy Ladela, told the presiding judge, Vincent Zehurikize, that on October 4, 2008, Isabirye beat his son, Tebalagemubi Aliwo, to death after he misappropriated money meant for school fees.

Isabirye accepted all that was said by the prosecution and pleaded for a light sentence, citing his old age. “My lord, I did not intend to kill my son, but it was out of anger. I am pleading for leniency because I am weak and almost losing my sight,” Isabirye said.

Zehurikize sentenced him to 12 years, saying he caused the death of his son, whose life he was supposed to protect.
