Elizabeth Andamaru, a tailor from Oli B cell, expects her business transactions to improve, following acquisition of new entrepreneurial skills. “I will be able to forecast what customers want, improve my customer care and accountability,” she said after a one-day training organised by African Network for the Protection and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN).

Andamaru was one of the 52 participants drawn from six sub-counties of Rhino camp, Ogoko, Ullepi, Vurra, Okollo and Oli Division in Arua district.

She said the profits she used to make from her sewing business had dropped due to stiff competition. Her attempts to get bank loans and use mobile money services to minimise costs had not yielded fruits because she was not able to keep proper records of her sales.

“I used to get sh200,000 as profit when I buy materials from Kampala for sh500,000. But it is difficult nowadays,” she lamented. Andamaru’s problems have been compounded by the breakdown of her sewing machines which prompted her to hire expensively from colleagues.

Despite these difficulties, she has to think about the thousands of children suffering in the neighborhood. “Children are not sent to school or given medical care. This is due to poverty and the fact that some parents lack basic business skills,” she argued.

Gilbert Omeda, the ANPPCAN programme officer, said by giving business skills to parents, they hoped to address the underlying problem of poverty and secure the children’s future.

“What is letting down many parents who would want to do business is that they don’t have the mindset or simply lack motivation,” said Robinson Amandrua of the Uganda Cooperative Alliance.
