THE Madhvani foundation has announced the names of the recipients for scholarships in the academic year 2010 - 2011. This academic year has seen the biggest amount of money ever donated by the foundation.

Last academic year (2009/10), the foundation donated sh516m to the same cause. However, the number of students to be sponsored has dropped from last year’s 175 to 149 this year.
This year, the foundation has donated sh536.6m to sponsor 149 students at university.

The sponsorship catered for 134 undergraduate students and 15 post-graduates. Among the undergraduates, the largest number (89) was for males while females got 45 slots. Males also got the highest number among post graduate applicants with 11 places compared to four for females.

“The foundation has done this in order to account for inflation and the increased cost of university tuition fees which is a common reality among institutions of higher learning across the country,” noted Henry Kyemba, the scholarships committee chairman.

Kyemba said the scholarships were evenly distributed across the country; with eastern region getting 43 slots, western 41, central region 38, while the north received 27 places.

Students who wish to apply for scholarships from the foundation in 2011/2010 academic year should look out for announcements in April 2011.

Applicants must be second year undergraduates with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.2.
