THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has called for more efforts in addressing Africa’s backwardness.

Bukenya said whereas the continent is the richest and most endowed region in the world, it remains backward and wallows in poverty.

He attributed the continent’s backwardness to Africans who appreciate simplicity and poverty as a way of life.”

The Vice-President was speaking last week during a meeting with African-American evangelists at his home in Garuga.

Bukenya urged religious leaders to play a leading role in developing Africa. He said much as religious teachings target the spiritual wellbeing of an individual, it is also important to address the body.

Africa, he said, needs to redevelop and build its social and economic structures to be able to compete with the rest of the world.

Bukenya said Africa is consuming sophisticated products and technologies from the developed world, but the continent could remain a mere market for the outside world, if it does not develop capacities to meet its needs.
