REMAINS of a UPDF soldier who was a member of the AMISOM peacekeeping force in Somalia have been laid to rest in Juwai village, Ngora district.

Cpl. Philip Osako, 27, died on September 18, in Aga-Khan Hospital, Nairobi, where he had been flown for treatment after an Islamist al-Shaabab deadly attack.

Osako’s uncle, Max Obore Oonyu, said he received information of his nephew’s injury in a bomb attack early last month. The blast had injured his right leg. However, the medical report from the hospital in Nairobi indicated that Osako had died of multiple organ failure.

The body was delivered to Uganda on Friday last week and given to the relatives for the burial, which was characterised by a gun salute.

A first born of Benjamin Otai and Lucy Alalo, Osako leaves behind four siblings and is survived by a widow and two children.

While handing over the body to the relatives, Capt. Venancio Tumwebaze paid tribute to Osako, saying his death had left a big gap in the army. He noted that the army had contributed sh1.3m towards his burial.

“The African Union and the Government will pay the deceased’s family his benefits,” Tumwebaze said.
