KEVIN Mafabi recovered from a game down to win against Kenyan opposition, as Uganda table tennis players recorded their first win at the Commonwealth Games competition.
However, the celebrations were short-lived as they fell to powerhouse Nigeria, losing out on the chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
With Jackson Migadde losing to Kenya’s Abdul Daim 3-1 in the first game, Mafabi knew that only a win would do in the second game, for Uganda to beat the Kenyans in the best-of-five format.
And though Mafabi lost the first game 12-10 to Mathenge Ringui, he came back to win the next three 11-8 12-10 11-8, before again beating Daim in the fourth contest 13-11 10-12 11-9 11-7 for a 3-1 Uganda win.
Ronald Nyaika had won the third contest in straight sets against Simon Mutinda.
