ABOUT eight families in Bukoma village in Buvuma district were on Monday left homeless after their houses were demolished during a road rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation is under the Community Agricultural Infrastructure Improvement Programme through the local government ministry.

Under the plan, about 1,455km community access roads are to be maintained in 26 sub-counties countrywide.

Christopher Batuli, one of the victims, said he had been promised compensation before the start of the road construction but he had got nothing.

He caused drama when he demanded to be killed as the grader began demolishing his house. “I cannot accept to watch the demolition of the house on which I spent money for construction. Let me get inside and be killed.”

But Batuli later jumped out of his house when he realised that the Nsambya-based contractors had started demolishing it, sending locals into laughter.

Mubiru, the area LC1 chairperson, said the residents had agreed to surrender part of their land for road construction without compensation.
