EVERY driver will have to part with at least sh2.6m on compulsory fire-proof wear in the National Rally Championship next year.

The Confederation of African Countries Motorsport (CACMS) resolved that the regulation that had previously been restricted to Africa Championship races be enforced at national level.

“Some Ugandan drivers and navigators who compete in the Pearl of Africa rally are compliant. They already wear fire-proof underwear, socks, racing boots, cloves and racing suit in national events for their own safety,” FMU vice president Kisitu Mayanja stated.

Gloves cost sh265,000, underwear goes for sh560,000, a racing suit costs sh1.3m, racing boots are priced at sh265,000 while a pair of socks is valued at 240,000 all totalling sh2.6m per person. A crew which comprises of a driver and co-driver will spend at least sh5.2m.

“For the last three years competitors knew that from 2011 fire-proof clothing would be compulsory. There’s no debate about it, some people claim they are uncomfortable but temperatures in Asia are much higher than here but competitors comply,” Kisitu argued.
