THE Police in Kitgum district are holding two residents of Mucwini sub-county over murdering a 16-year-old boy. The officer in charge of Kitgum Police Station, Jackson Baryampika, said Samuel Onen and Churchill Onen were arrested over the weekend.

He identified the dead as Geoffrey Oketta, a resident of Yepa trading centre. Oketta was killed on Friday after the residents suspected him of having stolen a solar panel.

“The suspects beat the boy and dragged him several metres to a hut where they tied him to a pole overnight. On opening the door the next morning, they discovered Oketta was already dead,” Baryampika said.

Sources said the two suspects handed themselves over to the local authorities after discovering Okette dead. Baryampika said the men would be charged with murder.

Residents said the rate of crime in Mucwini had increased, adding that people often take the law into their own hands.
