MOSES Kipsiro and Uganda’s afrobeat Kora award nominee, Susan Kerunen, were yesterday appointed goodwill ambassadors by the Uganda tourism board (UTB).

Kipsiro was recognised for winning two gold medals at the recently-concluded CommonWealth games in India, while Kerunen was appointed for emerging as the best African artiste in 2008 and 2009.

The athlete became the first runner to win two events at the Common Wealth games since 1938 when Cecil Mathews of New Zealand won the three-mile and six-mile races.

Parliament last week passed a motion recognising and paying tribute to Kipsiro for winning the gold medals.

Kipsiro and Kerunen also received two accolades from the UTB chairman, William Byaruhanga, at the media centre in Kampala.

Byaruhanga said the awards were given to the stars in recognition of their contribution in enhancing and promoting the country’s image.

He said Kerunen had promoted Uganda’s culture and heritage through her music.

Byaruhanga gave Kipsiro sh1m, saying the board would continue promoting his talent and supporting him on foreign trips to promote Uganda.

He added that Amanda Marks, the head of Tribes Travel in UK, had also been recognised internationally for marketing Uganda’s tourist attractions abroad.

Kipsiro also received sh1m from the managing director of Lakes Safaris, Amos Wekesa, as a token of appreciation.

Kipsiro said he was happy that his talent had made him popular. “I am very happy to be honoured and for the gold medals I won for Uganda. It was God’s will and I will do my best to continue promoting my country.”

Kerunen said the honour was an inspiration to step up her efforts in promoting the African culture and Uganda through music.
