ANTHONY Bongole will strive to redeem his status as one of Uganda’s top strikers when the national soccer team, The Cranes, confront Yemen in an international friendly on Sunday.

The in-form Proline forward was among the 18-man team that flew out yesterday hoping to resurrect their international careers ahead of this month’s CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and CHAN Championship finals early next year.

“I will try to do all I can to perform well. It feels great to be part of the team after so much work,” Bongole stated yesterday.

Bongole had become a permanent fixture in the Cranes team during German Laszlo Csaba’s era in 2008 but faded in subsequent months, dropping behind the emerging talents of Geoffrey Massa, Caesar Okhuti and later Brian Umony.

His troubles culminated last season with an unceremonious exit from former league champions KCC FC.

At Pro-line, Bongole has since worked his way back, topping the Uganda Super League scorers’ charts.

Among his strengths is running at defenders and the ‘never say die’ approach he brings to the game. Bongole so often operates best breaking through the wide positions but can - and does - pop up in a more central position.

Of course there are a few aspects about Bongole’s game that need to improve.

Just like Geoffrey Massa, Bongole’s first touch is suspect and there are moments in when he outpaces the ball. He also suffers from indecision when it gets to the final third of the pitch.

But overall, these are weaknesses Williamson will try to improve in Yemen. The team left at 11pm last night aboard Ethiopian Airways.
