INDEPENDENT presidential candidate Samuel Lubega has denied allegations that he has not held a single campaign rally since his nomination.

He said he has already spent over sh45m in the last seven days and requested the Government to give him more financial support.

Lubega claims to have completed his campaigns in the districts of Rakai, Masaka, Lyantonde, Lwengo, Kalangala and Bukomansimbi.

In an interview with New Vision at Rubaga division headquarters on Monday, Lubega said due to insufficient funds he only holds stop-overs in different trading centres and towns to reach as many people as possible.

“Apart from having no press coverage, there are some people from other camps who have been sabotaging my campaigns. By the time I reach some areas, people have already left,” he said.
“I have financial problems and it will be hard for me to cover the whole country.

Those I am contesting with belong to the NRM, although some are pretending to have quit and formed their own parties,” he said.

Lubega said the Electoral Commission (EC) had not given him his sh20m to support his campaign.

EC secretary Sam Rwakoojo yesterday said: “The fact is that money is not enough to run the campaigns. It is only a token. But we shall ensure it gets to the presidential candidates’ accounts as soon as possible,” he said.

Lubega promised to improve the welfare of the Police and other security personnel to reduce human rights violations.

“We are happy the Government has contained the security forces. But their living conditions are wanting. They have families but have not been fully catered for, and thus are tempted into dirty deals,” he said.

Lubega said there is need to have a defined mechanism of recruitment of security personnel. “The army is full of people from two regions. That is not fair if we are to have an effective and balanced force,” he said.
