THE number of women who undergo caesarean section in Kabale district is on the increase.

Out of 298 admissions at Kabale Hospital’s maternity ward in October, 213 deliveries were normal, 52 women delivered by caesarean section, two women died while giving birth and two babies also died.

Thomson Obong, the senior hospital administrator, on Saturday blamed the problem on women who do not go for antenatal check-ups or do so when it is too late.

He said some mothers visit traditional birth attendants who cannot handle complicated pregnancies.

Obong also attributed the problem to non-functional health units, which he said would help mothers who travel long distances to reach the referral hospital.

He also blamed husbands who do not take care of their pregnant wives.

Obong said there is only one occupational therapist at the hospital, adding that they have written to the health ministry, demanding more staff and funding.
