FIVE Grade One magistrates were on Friday sworn in by the deputy Chief Justice, Laetitia Mukasa-Kikonyogo, at the High Court in Kampala.

Kikonyogo, who is also the acting Chief Justice, urged the magistrates to stick to their oaths and deliver justice without fear, favour, affection or ill-will.

The magistrates, who were elevated from the Grade Two level, are Robert Imalingat, Wilson Wandera, Gordon Muhimbise, Richard Ndamba and Moses Baligeya Mufumbiro.

Elias Kisawuzi, the Judiciary spokesperson, said the swearing-in brought the number of Grade One magistrates countrywide to 120.

Kikonyogo reminded the magistrates that people had entrusted them with the wide judicial powers given by the Constitution that ensures their independence and protection against unjustifiable interference from any person or authority,

“I, therefore, appeal to you to guard your integrity jealously and ensure that justice is always paramount. You are expected to live above reproach and make the nation proud of the trust placed in you by living excellent judicial legacies. Live up to the high ideals of our noble profession,” Kikonyogo said.

The occasion was also attended by the Chief Registrar, Flavia Anglin, Kikonyogo’s personal assistant, Agnes Nkonge, and Chief Magistrates Harriet Busingye of the Anti-Corruption Division and Lilian Buchana of the City Hall Court.
