A HOME is ideally the place you feel most comfortable and proud of. We go to great lengths to make it look beautiful and welcoming. A home can also reflect your personality.

It is also frustrating to walk into your friends’ homes and find that you own the same sofas or other furniture.

To have a home with furnishings that are truly you and unique, have it customised. You can choose the style, material, size and even the price at which you get your furniture.

Ronald Kizito, an interior designer in Kampala, says furniture can be customised according to the space in your house, the theme you desire and the personality of the room versus the individual and your budget.

Kizito says: “Every customer is unique and deserves something that is made to suit them.

“We can either create a new sofa set to fit your surroundings uniquely, or reupholster your old sofa if you do not want to part with it.”

Customising furniture is important because it gives you the opportunity to plan and utilise your space as you wish. Sometimes, you find a nice set of sofas but it is either too big or too small for the space you have. You can have the same type of sofa made to fit in the space you have.

If you do not like the fabric on a set of sofas, you can have the same design with fabric of your choice.

There are different types of fabrics at your disposal. According to Kizito, an interior designer will often recommend hard wearing and stain resistant fabrics for long lasting furniture. The best part is that your sofa will always be unique.

Just because your neighbour has a beautiful 10-seater dining table, you do not have to buy the same for your family of only four. You can have the same style of table but smaller and more suited to your family.

If you would like to change themes every few years, custom-made furniture is the answer. Not only can you get a new set of whatever furniture you want to replace, you can have your old furniture re-upholstered with a different type of fabric but maintain the original style or shape.

Kizito says your interior designer will often recommend a timeless design but your opinions and needs come first.

Once you have decided on the theme of the room and anything else that you require, ask an interior designer to come in and plan for the space.

They also help you to build a theme and a colour scheme. It often takes two to three weeks to make the furniture. Some furniture companies will avail transport and place the seats in your house.

Take control today and have the house you deserve with the furniture you are proud to show off.
