THE shortage of engineers and technicians who can repair and maintain medical equipment is affecting the delivery of quality health services in the country, the director of clinical services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jacinto Amandua, has said.

He there were no technicians and medical engineers to repair diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in health centres around the country when they break down.

Amandua said maintenance of medical equipment as well as provision of spare parts remained a challenge to the health sector in Uganda.

“The future of health services in Uganda depends on engineering in the health sector,” Amandua said.

He was speaking yesterday at the opening of the second biennial East African Regional Healthcare Engineering Conference and Exhibition at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga.

The conference attracted engineers in the health sector from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Cameroon.

The conference aimed to devise ways for better planning and management of health infrastructure in the East Africa region.
