Guru Nanak Oils Mills Limited, a Lira-based firm making shea butter, has registered to participate in the AGOA forum and exhibition in Mauritius.

AGOA stands for the African Growth and Opportunity Act, a US government move intended to give 34 Sub Sahara African countries quota and tariff-free access to the US market.

The Mauritius forum will take place between January 13 and 17.
It was formerly to be addressed by US president George W. Bush, but the plan was later cancelled early in December last year.

Other local companies that have confirmed participation include, Southern Range Nyanza, Phenix Logistics and Textile Development Agency (TEXDA).

Dr. Maggie Kigozi, the Uganda Investment Authority executive director told The New Vision on Monday, “We allowed TEXDA to pick the best products from all small-scale producers throughout the country.”

“We have also picked gifts and handicrafts from as far away as Nebbi and Arua,” Kigozi added.
She said several coffee processors have registered under the Uganda Coffee Development Authority(UCDA).

She said they will display coffee beans, roasted and ground coffee under the brand name of Star Coffee.

Phenix Logistics and Southern Range Nyanza will show in Mauritius samples of their T-shirts, shirts, vests and children’s underwear.

Kigozi said apart from the exhibition, a forum will be held where African and US businesspeople can share experiences and chart the way forward to strengthen trade links.

Among leading US- based institutions also expected to attend include, the African Coalition for Trade and the Corporate Council on Africa.

“UIA will present a paper on ‘Infrastructure Investment and Build-out Opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa,” Kigozi added.
