KUMI — The LC5 chairman, Ismail Orot, has urged Teso leaders to ask for an urgent meeting with President Yoweri Museveni. Orot called The New Vision yesterday to say that as far as he and other civic leaders were concerned, there was no insurgency in the area. Four politicians from Teso, two of them former agents of Dr. Kizza Besigye in the 2001 presidential election, have been arrested on charges of treason.

Bukenya hails China
KAMPALA — The Minister for the Presidency, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has hailed the warm and cordial relations between Uganda and China. Bukenya, now on a visit to China, said this during a meeting with the Chinese Vice-premier, Qian Qichen at Zhongnanhai in Beijing. Many Chinese firms are investing here.

EC grievance desk coming
KANUNGU — The Electoral Commission is to set up a complaints desk to handle election-related cases. The chairman of the commission, Eng. Badru Kiggundu, said this during a meeting with Kanungu sub-county chiefs at the district Hall. Kiggundu said most register shortcomings like missing names result from irresponsible actions of election officials at the grass-root tribunals, a statement from the commission said. Kiggundu asked the officials to be more diligent to nurture Uganda’s young democracy.

Kisoro cop Arrested
KISORO – The district Police special branch officer, Francis Bwogi Katura, has been arrested by Operation Wembley officials. The regional Police commander, Edward Ochom, told The New Vision on Tuesday that Katura was arrested last week after two suspected robbers netted earlier, implicated him in criminal activities. Robert Senzoga, Cpl. John Turusiize and another man still at large are suspected to have robbed two people of francs equivalent to sh15m in December.

Lost property unclaimed
KAMPALA – Property worth millions of shillings has been left unclaimed at the UTODA offices, UTODA boss John Ndyomugyenyi has said. The property that mainly includes passports, suitcases, mattresses, and bags is said to have been taken to the UTODA offices earlier this month after taxi drivers failed to identify the owners. Ndyomugyenyi said most of the property was suspected to have been left behind accidentally by passengers.

Vendors to be checked
KAMPALA – The city council is to inspect all food markets and food outlets as one to the measures of promoting hygiene to curb the spread of cholera. In an interview with The New Vision, the city secretary for health, hygiene and environment, Francis Lubowa, said, “We are going to launch the exercise soon and all places that will be found selling food in a dirty environment will be closed,” Lubowa said. The exercise will be carried out by doctors and health inspectors.

Teachers to travel to UK
KAMPALA – Ten teachers will travel to the UK to participate in a study tour at the National College of Leaders mid this year. This was revealed to over 30 teachers from 10 selected secondary schools, who completed a two-day intensive leadership capacity-building workshop at Hotel Africana on Wednesday. Judith Mullen, a British education leadership adviser working with the British Council UK office said the workshop was the first step of the pilot project.

W Wakiso delays
AKISO – Primary school teachers in the district were not paid their December salaries in time because officials claimed they lacked cheque books. The district finance officer, John Babiha, on Wednesday said the delay in remitting the salaries was due to a shortage of cheque books as they waited for new ones from Uganda Commercial Bank.

KISORO – Jubilant Christians opposed to Muhabura Diocese Bishop-elect, the Rev. Can. Can. David Sebuhinja will next Sunday hold a thanksgiving service at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, to thank God for a decision made by the Anglican House of Bishops to postpone the consecration ceremony.

K’jong spoil
KATAKWI – Armed Karimojong warriors in army uniforms have continued to settle in the district, causing tension among the residents. The regional Police commander, Bob Ngobi, on Thursday said the warriors had settled in Kapelyebong county. He said they were uprooting cassava from gardens in Airabet, Acowa, Obalang and Ongalabiong villages. They also stole 60 head of cattle but vigilantes recovered 38.

Students irked
KAMPALA – Over 50 students from the Communication Institute in Nakawa have refused to sit for any other examination before their final results for the first year are released. According to the guild president, Joe Ekadit, the administration promised to release the final results by January 15 but instead pinned up the same provisional results for the first year.

50 arrested
KAMPALA – Kampala City Council rounded up 40 more mentally unstable people from the streets on Thursday. Dr. Dan Twebaze, the project coordinator of the urban sanitation project, said most of them were pickled from Wandegeya, Kamwokya, Ntinda and Nakawa. This brings to over 100, the number of people with mental illness, collected off the streets since the beginning of the week. All those netted were screened before being referred to Butabika Mental Hospital. Others were charged with being idle and disorderly.
