FEDERATION of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is in a fix after failing to secure sponsorship of the CECAFA Club Championship due to start on Sunday.

This leaves them with no hope other than the radio and television rights which they hope to sell by Friday.

A FUFA executive meeting held at the federation’s headquarters in Nakulabye, for the past two days, failed to get a breakthrough in securing sponsorship for the tournament.

Action will be at Mbale Municipal, Namboole and Nakivubo stadia.
“We have tried everything but there is no breakthrough. For now, the sponsorship is not forthcoming and I think we are going to rely on gate collections to be sure that we meet the costs incurred,” said FUFA vice president (administration) Godfrey Kwizera after the meeting.

Thirteen clubs will be accommodated, fed and transported by FUFA, whose appeal to Rwanda president Paul Kagame to sponsor the event was rejected.

Kagame nevertheless offered prize money amounting to $60,000 (sh108m).

“I know it is going to be hard but we will get on. I am sure the turn up will be good,” said Kwizera.

Somalia’s Elman, Eritrea’s Red Sea and Rwanda’s Rayon Stars will arrive in Kampala today. Sudan’s Khartoum 3 and Mlandege from Zanzibar are expected tomorrow.

Meanwhile, CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye is also expected in the country today to finalise preparations for the championship. Express and Villa will represent Uganda.
