BETTY Akech, higher education state minister has warned management of higher learning institutions to account for funds in order to provide better services to the students.

“You should ensure proper accountability of all resources channelled to you to benefit the institution especially the students because a lot of funds come to you either from government or donors. All funds received in the name of the institution becomes public resources which requires accountability,” Akech said.

The minister was inaugurating the first governing council of Bukalasa Agricultural College, in Luwero district.

She observed that most institutions of higher learning have not been able to account for funds given to them. Akech said it’s now the job of the council to see that administration accounts properly for the monies and expenditure be audited by the Auditor General.

“Student affairs are very important. There has been a lot of student unrest. We should try as much as possible to see that their affairs are managed through the students council in order to avoid strikes,” the tough talking minister said.

She said the ministry will not want to see any student unrest after the establishment of the governing council.

“We demand that you be transparent so that the bad name in the education circles is removed. You really must be critical on the ways you manage your finances in the institution,” Akech warned.

The council members are Ngobi Hassan, A.M. Nyamwegyendaho, M.W. Okot, M.J. Abala, Bede Kelly, Edna. A. Isooba, C.K. Ssemakula, Makumbi Swaleh, F. A. Ojacor and Cate Nassaazi.

The minister urged the council to work in partnership with the Education Service Commission to identify competent people for appointment to take position in institutions.
