The Movement top decision-makers’ meeting opens today at the Leadership Training Institute, Kyankwanzi, 200km northwest of Kampala.
Grace Matsiko and Felix Osike report that President Yoweri Museveni will chair the three-day meeting that will attended by over 200 delegates. The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting comes against a background of increased agitation for a return to party politics suspended in 1986.
NEC deals with policy matters, while the National Conference, the highest Movement organ which meets next week, evolves consensus on key political and economic issues
NEC is expected to deliberate on several controversial constitutional issues and to agree on the political timetable leading to 2006 when Museveni’s term expires.
The President has repeatedly said he will leave office when his second five-year term end, but some Movement supporters have urged him to stay.
Museveni will present NEC’s ad hoc report on whether there are grounds for the Movement to revisit the multiparty issue.
The 22-member task force set up during the 7th NEC meeting in December 2001 was headed by the National Political Commissar, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga.
NEC will also discuss the constitutional review exercise, mass mobilisation and federo.
