OVER 36,000 head of cattle in Moroto district have been marked as part of the exercise to curb cattle theft in the region, reports Richard Otim.

Moroto district acting chief administrative officer Aloysius Aloka said the exercise that begun July 2002 was conducted in Matheniko and Bokora counties.

He was recently briefing the district council on the progress of cattle branding at the district council chambers.

Aloka said Karamoja districts were coded as U1, U2 and U3 as livestock identification for Kotido, Moroto and Nakapiripirit districts respectively.

He said 36,150 head of cattle from Bokora and Matheniko were branded with U2B and U2M marks for the two counties respectively.

“This has helped us easily tell which cattle could have been stolen and the army has been using that as a guide to recover stolen cows,” Aloka said.

He said the exercise was interrupted by a prolonged drought that forced most herds out of the district.
