MULTIPARTY diehards have told the Movement’s National Executive Committee (NEC) which convened in Kyankwanzi yesterday, that the country is ripe for change to competitive politics, reports John Kakande.
“It is clear from the mood in the country that people want change. But that change should not be false change. Let everybody be a participant in modelling our path towards change,” Cecilia Ogwal, UPC stalwart and Lira Municipality MP, said in an interview.
Ogwal, Aggrey Awori and Ken Lukyamuzi called upon NEC to endorse political change.
But DP President Paul Ssemogerere argued that with last week’s Constitutional Court ruling, NEC has no option but to let the parties operate.
Ogwal, asked to comment about the NEC meeting that kicked off at the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi yesterday, said the committee and the forthcoming National Conference should not squander this opportunity that was lost in the Constituent Assembly, the Sixth Parliament and the current legislature when it passed the Political Parties and Organisations Act.
“Let this conference adopt a position in favour of democracy and competitive politics,” Ogwal said.
